Student Mental Health

CMH Members: Claudette Pretorius, David Coyle,

As part of our overall focus on youth mental health, members of CMH@UCD are involved several projects the seek to understand and support student mental health.

David Coyle is an Associate Editor of the journal Nature (NJP) Mental Health Research. Together with Dr Umair Akram, he is curating a collection of papers on student mental health. This collection will feature empirical and theoretical publications focused on identifying modifiable risk factors and interventional programmes to improve psychological and psychiatric distress in students. Further details of the collection are available here: https://www.nature.com/collections/gjidbaedjf

Together with researchers from the Insight Centre for Data Analytics based in UCC, and PhD student Olugbenga Oti, Claudette Pretorius is looking to understand the unique needs of students in higher education in accessing mental health support and how to support this. This mixed methods project, which included a large-scale survey conducted during Covid-19, provides understanding of how to support young people in higher education settings when they seek support for mental health difficulties using technology.
